Criterion deficiency limits a criterion’s relevancy when the dimensions are important, but being left out of the actual measure. Criterion contamination is when things are measured by the actual criterion but not the ultimate criterion (Levy, 2013). One way that criterion contamination limits a criterion’s relevance is by measurement error (Levy, 2013). For instance, the performance measurement might change, even though the actual performance has not changed. When that is the case, there is a measurement error. The measurement error is random, while the second cause of criterion contamination, bias, is systematic (Levy, 2013; Berry, Sackett, & Sund, n.d.). For instance, say employees at an advertising company were asked to rate the account executives on their interpersonal skills.
